8 arrested in Karbi Anglong for lynching

DIPHU, Feb 11: Eight persons were arrested till yesterday in connection with the Sunday night’s incident in which a 40-year-old was lynched at Karashi Bey village under Bakalia Police Station.

The arrested persons are Rustom Rongphar (25), Hukum Sing Ronghang (18), Dhoniram Rongphar (30), Sampri Teron (24), Khonbamon Tokbi (18), Siva Ronghang, Waisong Kramsa and Jip Enghi.

More persons are likely to be arrested soon. A case (No. 09/21) has been registered with the Bakalia Police Station in this connection.

According to police, the deceased, Monsing Rongpi, a resident of Barelong Bey village under Bakalia PS, was allegedly having an illicit affair with a woman of Karashi Bey village. Last year, in a meeting, the man had been warned not to come to the village by the villagers. However, he was seen entering the woman’s residence on Sunday night. A group of villagers then took him to the village playground and tied him to a football goal post and lynched him.

On receiving information the next day, police recovered the body and sent it to the Diphu Medical College & Hospital for autopsy.
