79 pc turnout in State repoll

GUWAHATI, April 18 � An estimated 79 per cent voting was recorded during re-polling in six centres of three Assam Assembly constituencies today, reports PTI.

Election officials said voting was held in a peaceful manner between 7 am and 3 pm. The Election Commission had ordered re-polling in these centres in Rangiya, Bhawanipur and Udalguri following disturbances during the second phase of the hustings on April 11.

Rangiya Corrspondent adds: Repolling at the four polling centres-53,54,55, and 56 of 57 Rangiya LAC today passed off peacefully and without any sort of disturbances or incidents amidst high security cover.

As per official sources, out of 2705 voters in these centres, the total turnout was 82.94 per cent in all the centres of 77 Udiana Balak Vidyalaya here. Kamrup (Rural) DC SK Roy, SP AJ Baruah, besides Election Observer, SDO (Civil) of Rangiya CD Singha, Election Officer GC Brahma, Rangiya SDPO Mrinal Deka, OC HC Das were present to monitor the repolling.

Repolling was announced by the Election Commission at these centres following an incident of violence indulged in by BSF men on the day of the final phase of poll here. The guilty BSF men had already been arrested.

Our Udalguri Correspondent adds: The repoll at polling station No.142 Uttar Udalguri LP School under Udalguri LAC was held peacefully under water tight security coverage. The voter turnout at the end of the poll at 3 pm was found to be 62.66 per cent. Out of 699 voters, 438 exercised their franchise.

As it was the lone repoll centre in entire Udalguri district, the whole district administration including the district election officer, police and paramilitary forces were seen supervising the polling process.
