77.38 per cent turnout in Kokrajhar LS seat

KOKRAJHAR, April 23 - Brisk and by and large peaceful polling, with a big turnout of voters marked the scene across the ten Assembly segments for the prestigious Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat today. Polling was estimated at 77.38 per cent till the filing of this report.

In rural areas of Kokrajhar, mostly women dressed in their traditional and colourful best, were seen queuing outside the booths since 6 am, an hour before polling began. In urban areas too, women were seen in sizeable numbers outside the polling booths as they waited patiently to exercise their franchise.

The polls held on Tuesday in the 30 Kokrajhar East Assembly segment under Kokrajhar parliamentary constituency also had a lot of technical snags in EVMs at different polling stations. The voting was interrupted for some moments, but resumed soon after the EVMs were changed. Three persons were injured in a group clash near Durgadas Sishu Niketan LP and ME School, Patharghat under Kokrajhar police station under 30-Kokrajhar East LAC at about 5.15 pm this evening. In the clash, three vehicles were also damaged. Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation. The injured have been admitted to the RNB Civil Hospital, Kokrajhar.
