NAGAON, April 18 - As many as 76.5 per cent voters today exercised their franchise in the Nagaon HPC till the filing of this report. The exact voting percentage is likely to increase as the final report is yet to be submitted by various polling and presiding units.

As per the report of the election media cell, Lahorighat LAC registered 84.50 per cent, Morigaon 76.45 per cent, Jagiroad 75.27 per cent, Raha 74.6 per cent, Nagaon 75.4 per cent, Barhampur 76.8 per cent, Jamunamukh 72.63 per cent, Hojai 76.6 per cent and Lumding 75.35 per cent polling.

Significantly, former Chief Minister and sitting Barhampur MLA PK Mahanta, his wife Dr Joyashree Goswami Mahanta and their son, Shyamanta Kashyap, did not cast their votes, reportedly as a mark of protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

On the other hand, BJP candidate for the Nagaon HPC, Rupak Sarma, BJP MP and Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain, former Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader Najnin Faruque and ex-Congress MLA Dr Durlav Chamua exercised their franchise in their respective polling stations in Nagaon town. BJP candidate Sarma, during an interaction with media persons after casting his vote, claimed that he would win by a record margin.

The entire polling process in the constituency went off peacefully and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere except the disruption of voting for some minutes in some polling stations due to EVM disorders. But the issues were resolved immediately and the malfunctioning EVMs were replaced.
