GUWAHATI, March 4 � The Assam Government has decided to appoint 7,000 teachers on contract basis to overcome the problem of shortage of teachers in the educational institutions. This was disclosed by the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Bharat Chandra Narah in reply to a question by Ramendra Narayan Kalita (AGP) in the State Assembly today.
The Minister revealed that the management committees of the educational institutions would be entrusted with the responsibility of selecting and appointing teachers on contract basis.
Narah ruled out the possibility of provicialization of new schools, but said that the Government has decided to provide financial assistance to the venture schools and colleges set up before the year 2000. He said that the teachers as well as third and fourth grade staff of the venture educational institutions would get fixed monthly salary as per the new scheme of the Government.
Narah revealed that the Government has initiated steps to regularize the services of the teachers appointed under Operation Black Board (OBB) in phased manner. There are 7963 OBB teachers in the State and the services of 50 percent of them would be regularized within two months.
Meanwhile, several members of the House including Girindra Kumar Baruah, Ananta Deka, Ranjit Dutta (BJP) and Drupab Borhogain (CPI) expressed concern over the agitation launched by the teachers of the three universities of the State demanding the revised pay recommended by the UGC. Rana Goswami (Cong) said that the Chief Minister recently held discussion with the authorities of the Universities in this regard and hoped that the Government would adopt a sympathetic attitude towards the issue.
On the other hand, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that the Government would give a detailed statement on the issue soon.
