JORHAT, Sept 21 - Continuing with the spree of burglary in shops, vehicle liftings, snatchings in recent times, criminals on Friday night targeted an elderly woman in a residential locality here to commit robbery.
A police source stated that Kiran Baruah, a septuagenarian and a retired employee of PWD was robbed off Rs 4000 and a mobile handset by a youth from her house at Pitambar Devgoswami Lane near Malow Ali after hitting her with a sharp weapon on her neck.
The source said that after committing the crime, the youth forced Baruah to hand him the keys of the veranda grill and the gate to flee from the house. The incident occurred at around 11 pm.
The source further said that the neighbours did not find any trace of any break-in in the residence of Baruah indicating that the criminal might have slipped in earlier and had been hiding inside since daytime. Baruah, who was taken to hospital was released after getting the necessary medication.
Since the beginning of this year, there has been a rise in incidents of thefts in shops, lifting of vehicles along with incidents of snatching bags containing cash and also mobile handsets from pedestrians and pillion-riders by motorbike-borne youths in and around the town.
