70 injured in Cachar district

SILCHAR, Jan 7 - As many as 70 people sustained injuries in Cachar district in the massive earthquake on January 4, according to a report from the Cachar District Health Department.

According to sources at the Disaster Management Control Room of Cachar district, yet another earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale was felt on Wednesday morning around 10.30 am. But no major impact was noticed due to it. �We have received an updated report about the list of persons who have sustained major and minor injuries during the earthquake on Monday. Also there are reports from the PWD regarding damage to many government buildings, including the officers� quarters of the district administration at Shillongpatty, Unnayan Bhavan and Central Jail, Silchar, and the NDRF team which is here is inspecting the impact of the damage caused,� a source from the Disaster Management Control Room said.

Meanwhile, Cachar Deputy Commissioner S Viswanathan, accompanied by officials of other departments, visited two bridges under the Lakhipur subdivision � one at Hmarkhawlien and the other over Jiri river at Jirighat � which have been badly affected by the severe earthquake on Monday, leading to traffic congestion on the route which connects Silchar with Manipur on the NH-37. During his visit, Vishwanathan ordered the officials of the PWD (NH) to start the repair works on the bridge at Hmarkhawlien to ease the traffic flow.
