SIVASAGAR, Jan 31: Seven youths were arrested by Sivasagar police today in connection with the ransacking of a hotel at Namti Chariali following the death of one Golapjan Ali (42).
Ali was the secretary of the Aikya Sena, Asom.
The youths arrested by police are Farid Islam Hazarika, secretary, Aikya Sena central committee, Babul Bennet, district president of Aikya Sena, and Inamuddin Ahmed, Sarifuddin Ahmed, Ritu Rahman, Mintu Rahman and Nausad Ali. They were arrested under sections 147, 148, 149, 326, 295(a) and 274 of the IPC. They were later produced before the CJM, Sivasagar, and sent to Sivasagar jail.
According to eyewitnesses, on January 29, the driver of a car had suddenly stopped the vehicle near Amtal Chariali and opened the door on his right. Ali, who was riding a scooty behind the car, crashed into it and sustained a fatal injury. Ali died in a Dibrugarh nursing home yesterday.
Police arrested the persons after an FIR was filed by the owner of the line hotel.
