7 youths arrested in Jorhat for theft cases

JORHAT, April 24 - The Jorhat Police since Saturday have arrested seven youths in connection with several cases of theft and snatching that occurred in the town during the last fortnight.

A police source informed that Swapan Das of Natun Garamur outskirts here and Akash Basfor of Pulibor outskirts were arrested on charges of their involvement in the incident of theft in a wholesale grocery shop in the wee hours of April 16.

The duo along with two others reportedly broke the locks of shutters of the shop and decamped with Rs 12 lakh after breaking the cash-box, the source stated.

The source said that the images captured in the CCTV of the shop matched a lot with the duo and dresses worn by them at the time of committing the crime have been recovered from their homes.

The police are trying to nab other two men involved in the crime, the source said, adding that investigation was on also to recover the amount stolen from the shop.

Five others have been arrested on charges of their involvement in recent incidents of snatching and thefts including motorbike lifting, the source said.

Among the arrested persons is one Hari Prasad Tanti of Lohpohia Tea Estate, who along with an associate on a motorcycle reportedly snatched a bag containing Rs 1.5 lakh from an elderly woman on April 8 at Thana Road here.

The source informed that cheque book, two mobile handsets and a bank passbook belonging to the woman, which were inside the bag, have been recovered from Tanti�s possession.

Efforts are on to apprehend the other youth involved in the incident and also recover the money snatched from the woman, the source added.
