7 killed, 10 hurt in road mishaps

GUWAHATI, April 11 � Seven people died while 10 others sustained injuries in three separate road mishaps in the last 24-hours in different parts of the State.

Police said a speeding pick up van collided with a truck head on at Roshinapara over NH-37 in Goalpara, about 200-kilomters from here, killing three passengers.

Two passengers died on the spot while the other succumbed to his injuries at the Goalpara Civil Hospital. Goalpara police stated that the pick up van lost control and hit the truck at around 10 pm.

This was followed by another accident in Morongi in Golaghat district where three people died and five others were injured after a passenger vehicle lost control and fell into a nearby ravine at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. The injured were rushed to hospital.

�The condition of five injured are stable. We are probing the cause of accident,� police said.

In another incident at Makum in Tinsukia district, a bus met with an accident in which one person died and four others sustained injuries. The State has witnessed tremendous increase in road accidents with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi recently asking the authorities to analyze the causes of road accidents. Guwahati topped the list of mishaps and deaths and number of injured persons. Since May 2006, 2237 accidents occurred within the city limits claiming 787 lives, besides leaving 2289 others injured. Nagaon with 668 deaths comes second behind Guwahati in terms of deaths, but the second highest number of accidents after Guwahati has occurred in Cachar district, which recorded 1364 accidents followed by Nagaon with 1329 accidents.
