7 all-women polling stations in Cachar dist

SILCHAR, March 12 - In addition to the introduction of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) facility for error free voting in Silchar constituency, the Cachar District Election Office has decided to commission one all-women polling station in each of the seven LACs under the district during the Assembly election slated to be held on April 4.

Talking to The Assam Tribune on Saturday Simanta Kumar Das, Additional Deputy Commissioner cum District Election Officer said that the concerned officials are doing a recce to identify a polling station in each constituency. �As per the instructions from the Election Commission of India, women officials are included in the process to reduce the gender disparity. All the presiding officers, polling officers, micro-observers and police in polling station will be women. This would send out the message that we are giving importance to women,� Das said.

He was quick to add that adequate security arrangements will be made for the women officials during the election process.

He further informed that of the 1281 polling stations in the district, as many as 70 polling stations will have webcasting facility which people can watch online on the district election web portal. He added to say that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be distributed to the polling stations on the eve of polling. The EVMs for polling stations in Sonai Dholai and Katigorah constituency will be distributed from Cachar College while the voting machines for Silchar, Udharbondh Borkhola and Lakhipur constituencies will be distributed from NATRIP which is also the reception centre of the EVMs.
