67th Independence Day celebrated with enthusiasm

GUWAHATI, Aug 16 � The 67th Independence Day was celebrated all over the State with the usual enthusiasm. Our correspondents report:

Morigaon:The 67th Independence Day was celebrated here at Morigaon with enthusiasm. Amidst a huge gathering, the National Flag was hoisted by Dr Nazrul Islam, Minister, Food & Civil Supply at the Tarun Ram Phukan playground, Morigaon. He also took the salute of police, CRPF, NCC. Addressing the gathering, Dr Islam paid glowing tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and the hundreds of martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the country's freedom struggle. In the function, several meritorious students and recognised innovator of National Innovative Foundation, Dina Nath Pandey were felicitated. Cultural programmes were also held on the occasion.

Udalguri: In Udalguri, Independence Day was centrally celebrated at the Parade ground where Thaneswar Malakar, Deputy Commissioner of the district highlighted the achievements of the government on various fronts and announced some important projects to be implemented soon. He also announced that eight police outposts have been upgraded to police stations in the district including Bhairabkunda and Amjuli. A record number of 640 students from different schools and colleges of the region participated in the march past. The DC hoisted the Tricolour and received the salute from the march past. He also gave away the Chief Minister�s Best Community Action award to Prof Binoy Medhi, retired principal of Tangla College while Lt Col VS Furtado of Red Horn Division, Kharga Prasad Sarmah, gaonburah of Udalguri, Lt Col VK Budhwar, of Red Horn Division, SI VK Singh, Satyen Das, Ananata Bagh, Premeswar Rabha, conservators etc., were also awarded for their contribution to public service and public security respectively.

On the other hand, Chandra Mohan Chetry, Gobardhan Prasad Chouhan, Bhargav Das, Dr Rohit Brahma, Jatindra Kumar Sarmah of Udalguri district were also awarded along with other ten persons for their contributions to the society. The Udalguri district administration also felicitated Sewali Das, mother of martyr Prabin Das of Bhergaon who laid down his life a few months ago in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tinsukia: Amidst bandh and tight security, the nation�s 67th Independence Day was celebrated at the ITI Field here where the Tricolour was unfurled by the Deputy Commissioner, Puru Gupta, who also inspected the guard of honour and took the salute of the march past.

North Lakhimpur: The 67th Independence Day was celebrated with traditional pomp and gaiety in North Lakhimpur. The official function was held at the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School with the hoisting of the National Flag by Sumitra Patir, Parliamentary Secretary, Social Welfare, Govt of Assam and the Dhemaji MLA. She took the salute of the parade and inspected the guard of honour.

Digboi: Independence Day was celebrated at various places of Margherita subdivision including Margherita and Digboi with considerable enthusiasm. At Margherita, the main programme began with the flag hoisting by Rajendra Prasad Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, Govt of Assam at the Central Field. He was presented a guard of honour by the squads of the Assam Police and the NCC units from various educational institutions. This was followed by award of prizes to various persons and groups for their excellence in diverse facets of community life.

At Digboi, the National Flag was hoisted by Barun Borpuzari, Executive Director, IOCL (AOD) at the Jubilee Field. In Gandhi Maidan the National Tricolour was unfurled by Abu Hussain, a social activist. At Digboi College, the National Flag was hoisted by Dr Dip Saikia, principal of the college.

Diphu: The 67th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour in the trouble-torn district defying the 300- hour bandh called by the KPLT. The day was celebrated centrally at Diphu KASA stadium where the National Flag was unfurled by the State HAD Minister Kharsing Engti.

Independence Day was also celebrated with enthusiasm at Bokajan and Hamren subdivisions. The National Tricolour was unfurled by Bidyasing Engleng, Parliamentary Secretary, Government of Assam and Joyram Engleng, CEM, KAAC at Bokajan and Hamren respectively.

Haflong: At Haflong, the district headquarters of Dima Hasao, the Independence Day was celebrated at the NL Daolagupu Sports Complex. Debojeet Thaosen, Chief Executive Member, NC Hills Autonomous Council unfurled the National Tricolour.

On the occasion, prizes and certificates were given to three meritorious students of the HSLC Examination 2013 of Dima Hasao. Abinash Patowary, a student of Don Bosco High School, Haflong received the award for getting the first position in the district in the HSLC Examination 2013. The Chief Minister�s Best Community Action Award for Development 2013 was handed over to the Gorkha Sports and Cultural Organisation, Haflong. The award for good performing teacher for the year 2013 from the district was given to Jagir Khan, assistant teacher of Muolhoi High School, Haflong.

Dergaon: The Tricolour was unfurled by the Dergaon Circle Officer Tapan Kr Gohain at the central programme held at the Naren Sarmah Memorial Field here. Taking part as the chief guest, Dergaon MLA Arati Hazarika Kachari explained different developmental schemes of the government and urged all to extend their help in their proper implementation. Earlier, tributes were paid to the martyrs of the freedom struggle. In the programme, several freedom fighters were also felicitated.

Hailakandi: The 67th Independence Day was also celebrated in Hailakandi. The main function was organised by the district administration on the premises of the DC office. Excise and Sports minister Ajit Singh unfurled the Tricolour.

The minister felicitated various eminent persons of the district including educationist Allahma Maulana Taibur Rahman, Maulana Sarimul Haque, Manash Kanti Das, Bijoy Kumar Dhar among others. The Hailakandi district committees of Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya & Samaskriti Sanmilan and Barak valley Blood Donors� Forum were also felicitated on the occasion for their activities. Mobile phone headsets were distributed among ASHA workers under NRHM.

Kokrajhar: The chief of BTC, Hagrama Mohilary unfurled the Tricolour at the Govt HS & MP school playground amid a huge gathering. Earlier, he also took the guard of honour and distributed rewards and citations of honour to the beneficiaries for outstanding performances in various fields.

Kalaigaon: The 67th Independence Day was celebrated at Kalaigaon and Tangla with gaiety. At Kalaigaon, Dina Moni Das, Circle Officer, Kalaigaon Revenue Circle hoisted the National Flag at Gandhi Bakori field. The Circle Officer felicitated six people namely� Mukta Ram Deka (social work), Lakhi Saharia (retired sports teacher), Dadhi Basumatari (best gaonburah), Kushal Saharia (Assam Police), Samsuddin Ahmed (VDP), Bhadra Kanta Nath and Thaneswar Boro (best farmer) for their remarkable contribution to the society in respective fields.

Tangla: At commercial town Tangla, DN Hazarika, Circle Officer, Harisinga Revenue Circle hoisted the National Flag at Tangla HS School playground in the presence of nearly 5000 people. Four persons namely� Suchibrata Saharia (best student), Gajendra Kachari (best VDP worker), Ramji Prasad and Oman Ali (best gaonburah) were awarded.

Nalbari: Despite the boycott call given by some militant outfits including ULFA, the 67th Independence Day was celebrated in Nalbari district with pomp and gaiety. Minister of Information and Public Relations and Fisheries, Basanta Das hoisted the National Tricolour at the central function held at Nalbari Police Reserve parade ground. The minister also inspected the guard of honour by the security personnel and students from different schools. In his speech, the Minister said that the Government is committed to solve the State�s burning insurgency problem. He added that the State government has taken up various welfare schemes for journalists in the State. A pension scheme for journalists was also announced by the minister. Das added that the funds to help sick journalists has been raised from Rs one core to Rs 10 crore.

Rangiya: Independence Day was celebrated in an elaborate manner by the Rangiya civil administration at the Rangiya HSS playground. The National Flag was hoisted by Parliamentary Secretary of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Dept, Bibekananda Doley. Later, a guard of honour was given and a colourful parade was displayed by the Assam Police Battalion, NCC, Scouts & Guides troupes. Colourful patriotic cultural items were put forward by different school students later. SDO (Civil), Rangiya Manisha Cheleng, local MLA Ghanashayam Kalita and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Mangaldai: Independence Day was celebrated by the people of Darrang district with tremendous enthusiasm and fervour. The Darrang district administration observed the Day with a function organised centrally here at the Kachari Maidam. Nilamani Sen Deka, Minister for Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs, Govt of Assam while participating as the chief guest unfurled the National Tricolour. Earlier, along with Deputy Commissioner, Sohrab Ali and Superintendent of Police, Jitmol Doley, the chief guest took the salute of the march past performed by troupes of SSB 37 Bn, 3rd IR Mizo Bn, Darrang Police (both men and women), Home Guards, NCC boys and girls of Mangaldai College, NCC boys of Mangaldai Govt HS and Dahi HS School and guides team of the Mangaldai Girls� HS School. In connection with the celebrations, a few selected groups and individuals including meritorious students, progressive farmers etc., were also feted with citation and cash for their outstanding contribution in their respective fields while Godhan Gopal, a non-government organisation working in dairy development was selected for this year�s Chief Minister�s best community action award.

Badarpur: The main function of the Independence Day was held at the Badarpur NC College playground where hundreds of people braving torrential rain took part. However, the main function of Karimganj district was held at Karimganj Govt School playground where the Border Areas Development Minister Siddique Ahmed hoisted the National Tricolour. He also took the salute of an impressive march past presented by security personnel. The day was also observed by various clubs and organisations, schools and colleges etc.

Goalpara: The 67th Independence Day was celebrated by the district administration with traditional enthusiasm and gaiety at the JTS ground here in Goalpara.

Ceremonially unfurling the Tricolour, chief guest Akon Bora, Minister, Social Welfare & Jails inspected the parade and took salute from the parade contingents. The highlights of the programme included the colourful march past by parade contingents and band display by the Sainik School band and a cultural entertainment programme based on the patriotic theme and folk dances. While Vishma Kumar Thapa, a photo journalist was felicitated on the occasion for his achievements in the recent Indo-African Photo contest, 2013, Atabar Ali was felicitated for showing exceptional courage in saving a boy from drowning in the river Brahmaputra.

Sualkuchi: Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unfurled the National Tricolour at the Kamrup district headquarter Amingaon on the occasion of the 67th Independence Day. He also received the salute of the police and the security personnel. Later, a cultural programme was also held.
