NEW DELHI, Dec 6 - Reflecting a poor track record of detection and deportation the Centre on Tuesday revealed that approximately 6,700 Bangladeshi nationals were deported to neighbouring country after completion of identification process.
In a Lok Sabha reply Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said that there is no confirmed data with regard to number of Bangladeshi citizens illegally residing in the country and their involvement in criminal and terrorist activities. However, some illegal Bangladeshi immigrants may be involved in cases relating to theft, burglary, smuggling, human and drugs trafficking.
The Government has strengthened Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent infiltration of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Besides, bilateral mechanisms such as Joint Working Group on Security, Director General level talks between Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Home Secretary level talks and Home Minister level consultations are in place between the two countries to address problems arising from illegal border crossing, trans-border crimes like smuggling of drugs, fake Indian currency notes, human trafficking.
