65th Republic Day celebrations in Assam

GUWAHATI, jan 28 � The 65th Republic Day was celebrated with the usual fanfare and enthusiasm across the State. Our Correspondents report:

Biswanath Chariali: The 65th Republic Day was observed at Biswanath Chariali, too, along with the rest of the country. The National Tricolour was unfurled at the Parade Ground here by Rajendra Prasad Singh, the Parliamentary Secretary for Industry and Commerce followed by the guard of honour presented by Assam Police, CRPF, Assam Rifles, NCC, Scouts and Guides etc. In his address, Singh highlighted the various schemes undertaken by the State Government. MLA, Biswanath LAC, Prabin Kumar Hazarika, Chairman, Biswanath Municipality Board, Dilip Kumar Baruah, SDO (C), Biswanath subdivision, Narayan Konwar etc., were also present on the occasion. A good number of people including social worker, Karuna Sharma Baruah, senior scribe, Pradip Kumar Sharma etc., were felicitated in the programme while local artists made colourful presentations of patriotic songs and dances.

Dibrugarh: The 65th Republic Day was observed with pomp and gaiety at Dibrugarh University. The National Flag was hoisted by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Alak Kr Buragohain in the University playground after which he took the salute from a number of teams from the University and the neighbouring schools who marched past with the University Model School band. In his speech, the VC recalled the invaluable contribution of the makers of the Indian Constitution. Paying rich tributes to the nation builders, he stated that India has emerged as one of the biggest and the best democracies in the world today only on the strength and extraordinary vision embodied in our Constitution.

As a part of the celebration, the VC and the representatives from the faculty members and the non-teaching staff gifted school bags to the children of menial workers of the University with an appeal to their parents to send their wards to the school regularly for their education.

A friendly tug-of-war and a volleyball match were organised between the Registrar's Eleven and the Vice Chancellor�s Eleven. The participating students and children were treated to fruits and sweets.

Dudhnoi: The National Tricolour was unfurled for the first time by the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) Tankeswar Rabha who also took the salute of an impressive march past by school and college going students amidst the presence of a large enthusiastic and cheering crowd, at the Republic Day function organised jointly by the RHAC and the local administration held at the Dudhnoi playground, our Goalpara correspondent reports.

The CEC in his speech pledged to focus on three important aspects � firstly on the education and the health sector to remove the ongoing superstition from the society, secondly on rubber plantation and other self-employment activities to remove unemployment and lastly to develop a viable tourism sector.

Contingents from Bikali College, Don Bosco, Damra, Jawahar Navodoya Vidyalaya, Dudhnoi, Sishu Niketan, Dudhnoi, St Peter�s National Academy, Dudhnoi Boys� and GIrls� HS School were some of the local schools and college which participated in the march past. The programme also witnessed a colourful cultural show including the rendering of Lakshminath Bezbaroa�s O Mur Apunar Desh in multiple languages.

Golakganj: Republic Day was celebrated with enthusiasm in Dhubri town. Parliamentary Secretary Rekibuddin Ahmed unfurled the National Flag at the PC Baruah ground in the district head quarters in the morning. He took the salute and reviewed a colourful parade by Police, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps and others. Kumud Chandra Kalita, DC, Dhubri and senior officials, local people attended the function.

Hailakandi: The main function of the Republic Day in Hailakandi was held at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose stadium. Excise, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ajit Singh unfurled the Tricolour. In his address, Singh paid tributes to the freedom fighters and urged the youth to follow the path shown by them. The Minister gave away different awards and felicitated some important personalities for their contribution in the respective fields including Hiralal Debnath, who toured throughout the country on a motorcycle for creating awareness on road traffic signs and accidents. Various traditional cultural items were also performed in the function.

Morigaon: Along with the rest of the country, the 65th Republic Day was observed here at Morigaon with enthusiasm. Amidst a huge gathering, the National Flag was hoisted at Tarun Ram Phukan playground by Dr Nazrul Islam, Minister for Food & Civil Supplies. He inspected the guard of honour and took the gun salute of police and CRPF. Addressing the gathering, Dr Islam dwelt at length about the welfare schemes taken up by the State government for the all-round development of the rural masses. In the function, two freedom fighters were felicitated. Earlier, the Minister paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

North Guwahati: The Republic Day was observed at the headquarters of Kamrup District (Rural) at Amingaon in the presence of a large gathering at the Parade Ground.

The Minister for Health and Education Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the National Flag and spoke about the developmental activities of the Government. Later, cultural programmes were held and fruits distributed among the patients of Tolaram Bafna District Hospital.

North Lakhimpur: The 65th Republic Day was celebrated in North Lakhimpur with traditional pomp and gaiety. The official ceremony of Republic Day was held in the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School where the National Flag was hoisted by Gaurav Bothra, the Deputy Commissioner, Lakhimpur. He took salute of the parade led by Karabi Mazumdar, DSP, Lakhimpur and inspected the guard of honour. Personnel from Assam Police, APBN, ITBP and various NCC groups took part in the parade and march past. Tableaus of various governmental agencies also participated in the march past. The Republic Day was also celebrated in ITBP�s training centre in Kimin where the National Flag was hoisted by RK Shah, DIG, ITBP. In Dhakuakhana, the Civil SDO, Anupam Chaudhury hoisted the National Tricolour in the Republic Day parade.

Rangiya: Republic Day was celebrated at Rangiya subdivision with fervour and enthusiasm. The Republic Day parade was held at Rangiya HSS playground amidst a huge gathering. Parliamentary Secretary, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department, Govt of Assam Bibekananda Doley was the chief guest on the occasion, who hoisted the National Flag. Later, the chief guest was given a guard of honour and a colourful march past show was displayed by the troupes of the Assam Police Battalion, NCC and Bharat Scouts & Guides troupes from different colleges and institutions of the greater subdivision. The chief guest in his speech recalled the significance of the day and all the great heroes of the nation who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Freedom fighters, sportspersons, noted farmers were felicitated on the occasion. Freedom fighters, local MLA Ghanashyam Kalita, SDO (Civil) Manisha Cheleng, SDPO i/c Nabaneet Mahanta of Rangiya besides other government officials, invitees were also present in the event. A variety cultural show was performed by the different school students later.

Udalguri : Republic Day was celebrated in various parts of Udalguri district. The central programme was held at Udalguri Court parade ground where Thaneswar Malakar, DC of Udalguri district hoisted the National Tricolour and took the salute of the march past of school children of various schools and security forces on the occasion. Reports of celebration of Republic Day were also received from Mazbat, Rowta, Orang, Tangla, Bhergaon, Khoirabari and Kalaigaon areas of the district.
