GUWAHATI, May 15 - Only 65 of the total 4,234 government-run schools in the State could ensure 100 per cent success in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination this year.
The number of private schools with cent per cent results stood at 426.
Further, of the 289 schools (both government and private), which recorded a pass percentage in the range 0-9 per cent, 37 are government schools.
The total number of secondary schools in the State is 7,000 of which 4,234 are government-run schools. The remaining are private or venture schools.
Talking to media persons today at the SEBA office here, Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya conceded that nearly 40 per cent of the candidates not being able to clear the examination is a matter of concern and that the department will have to introduce an action plan to reach out to those students.
The minister also informed that there is a need for introspection for schools that have a pass percentage below 9. �We will soon have an exercise wherein both the school authorities and the guardians would be invited to discuss the pros and cons,� he said.
The minister, however, stated that the number of students getting registered for the matriculation examination is showing an increasing trend, which is encouraging. While the number of such students stood at 4,31,137 in 2018, the figure shot up to 4,54,160 in 2019, witnessing an increase of nearly 21,000.
The minister further said that the State education department has introduced four new vocational courses this year for the secondary students which include agriculture and horticulture. �Vocational training on private security, health care, and tourism and hospitality would also be imparted to make them employable,� Bhattacharya said.
�We are also planning to organise a job fair keeping in mind the need and aspiration of such students,� he stated.
