64th KAAC foundation day celebrated

DIPHU, June 23 � The 64th Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) foundation day was celebrated with great enthusiasm here today at the Diphu Government Higher Secondary School playground. Thousands of people from different parts of the district participated in the foundation day celebrations.

The celebrations started with garlanding of the statue of Semson Sing Engti and hoisting of the national flag. Subsequently, the newly-constructed GNM School and Girls hostel inside the complex of the Diphu Government College were inaugurated by Kharsing Engti, HAD Minister, Government of Assam and Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member (CEM), KAAC respectively.

Although chief minister Tarun Gogoi was to address the open session of the celebration as the chief guest, due to bad weather condition he could not attended the function.

The open meeting began with felicitation of three students who secured highest marks in the HSLC final examination from the district and farmers who had given good performances in agricultural production. They were felicitated with a citation and cash amount.

While addressing the open meeting, MP of Diphu constituency, Biren Sing Engti expressed unhappiness over failure of the government to provide protection to the common people of Karbi Anglong, living along the inter-State Assam-Nagaland and Assam-Meghalaya borders. He said that the State government should take some constructive measures immediately to solve the long-pending border disputes.

Besides, he expressed concern over the poor infrastructure development of the towns of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. Pointing out the poor financial condition of the people of both the districts, Engti said that unemployment problem is increasing everyday because of lack of importance given to solve the crisis.

Meanwhile, he urged the KAAC representatives as well the State government to work jointly for the development of the autonomous hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. Moreover, Engti strongly opposed the land Bill of the Central government saying that the new land Bill will not benefit the people of the country.

Addressing the crowd, Tuliram Ronghang, the CEM of KAAC, highlighted the proper implementations and speedy progress of various Central-sponsored schemes in the district. He said that the KAAC has been facing severe financial crisis due to the lack of direct funding system. A few development schemes are progressing slowly due to non-receipt of funds on time. Ronghang sought public support for ushering in peace and progress in the district.

In his speech, Kharsing Engti, HAD Minister, claimed that people have been witnessing round-the-clock developments in the State during Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government�s rule.

Meanwhile, Engti assured to help the KAAC and the people of Karbi Anglong in every field from his side. Later, Engti released the KAAC souvenir.
