61.42 pc pass HSLC Exam

GUWAHATI, May 28 � Achyut Ranjan Gogoi of Nazira Jatiya Vidyalaya (585) of Sivasagar and Imdadur Rahman of Rakhaldubi High Madrassa of Goalpara district topped the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa (AHM) examinations-2014 respectively, the results of which were announced today.

But what drew equal attention, if not more, was the unprecedented and record dip in the overall pass percentage of the HSLC Examination this year.

Compared to last year, the overall pass percentage this year at 61.42 per cent witnessed a dip of nearly 10 per cent. Last year, the pass percentage was 70.71.

This is the first time in the last 14 years that the overall pass percentage has witnessed a dip.

It was in the year 2001 that the percentage had dropped to 33.27 from 38.69 in the preceding year.

Of the 3, 69,075 candidates who appeared in the examination, 2, 26,685 emerged successful which included 1, 17,057 male and 1, 09,628 female candidates. Last year, the total number of successful students was 2, 59,149, informed JVN Subramanyam, Chairman, Board of Secondary Education, Assam.

A total of 39,906 students secured first division compared to last year�s 28,337, while the number of students securing second and third division stood at 82,793 and 1, 04,886 respectively. The number of third division holders has come down, which is seen as an encouraging development (1, 68,819 in 2013).

The number of candidates scoring �Letter� marks and above has also gone up to 36,610, with English and Assamese subjects leading the lot.

Among the districts, Dhemaji has recorded the highest pass percentage with 80.39 per cent. Barpeta and Nalbari occupied the second and third positions with 76.42 per cent and 75.99 per cent respectively.

Kamrup (Metro), this year, recorded a pass percentage of 67.83 with only four candidates making it to the top 10 positions.

In the Assam High Madrassa Examination, 2014, the pass percentage was 61.4 per cent with the number of successful students being 6,113.

A total of 3,255 female candidates compared to 2,858 males, emerged successful.
