NEW DELHI, June 11 The Ministry of Human Resources Development today asked State Education Ministry to go for revamp of the elementary education cycle in the State. At least 61 per cent of the teachers in Assam are untrained and unqualified.
This was conveyed to the State Education Minister, Gautam Bora by Union HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal, when he called on him here today.
Official sources said the delegation from Assam was told that the elementary education cycle in Assam is of seven years (four years of primary and three years at upper primary) which is not in conformity with the national pattern, and they would need to change to the 5+3 elementary cycle.
Considering 61 per cent of elementary school teachers in Assam are untrained, they were also advised that teachers who do not possess the academic qualification (class XII) would need to acquire it, either through the NIOS or through State open schools.
Thereafter, they also need to acquire the two-year Diploma in Elementary Education in distance mode of the IGNOU or a State Open University, sources said.
Bora was informed that teacher recruitment policy would need to be amended to enable recruitment of subject teachers and of part-time instructors for Art Education, Health and Physical Education and Work Education at the upper primary level.
The State was also asked to assess infrastructural gaps in existing schools, undertake mapping for establishment of neighbourhood schools and also establish School Management Committees (SMCs). He was also asked to take steps for Notification of RTE Rules.
Bora reportedly informed that Assam had constituted the SCPCRs, sources added.
