6 students hurt as school bus overturns

JORABAT, Sept 19 - At least six students were injured when the school bus on which they were travelling overturned near here on Wednesday evening.

According to Jorabat traffic police, 31 students of Sanskriti Vidyapeeth, Morigaon, were travelling on two school buses from IIT Guwahati to Morigaon, when one of the vehicles (AS 21C 9055) carrying 17 students overturned at 10th Mile around 7 yesterday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, the speeding bus overturned after the driver lost control. Jorabat traffic police soon reached the spot and rushed the injured students to the District Hospital, Sonapur, while the driver escaped from the scene leaving the other students high and dry. The injured students were later shifted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for better treatment.

The injured students were Doli Nondi (15), Puja Mandal (13), Deepsikha Chauhan (15), Tanuj Taparia (11), Rahul Toshniwal (13) and Sidharth Shankar Kanwar (14). One of them, who received minor injuries, was released from the GMCH after some time, while the other five were released this afternoon, informed Jorabat traffic police outpost in-charge Gopal Bora.
