ITANAGAR, March 1 - At least six shops and a Panchayat hall were reduced to ashes in a major fire that broke out at Gandhi Market, Mechukha, in Shi-Yomi district in the wee hours today.

The intensity of the fire that broke out at around 2.30 am was so massive that not a single item could be saved from the blazing shops, sources said.

Though no casualties have been reported, properties worth lakhs of rupees were lost in the fire mishap. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Despite being one of the oldest subdivisional headquarters of the State, Mechukha is yet to get a fire station to mitigate fire-related incidents.
