DIBRUGARH, July 21 - Hours before a six-month-old baby boy could be carried away for illegal adoption, volunteers from Childline with the help of police and District Child Protection Unit rescued the infant from Chandmari here.

According to the local community, the father of the baby killed the mother on July 16 and fled away; leaving the baby in the custody of the owner in whose house they were staying as tenants. Childline sources told The Assam Tribune that the baby was about to be handed over to someone for adoption illegally today.

We received information about the six-month-old baby going for illegal adoption today. We rushed to the house of the owner in Chandmari along with the District Child Protection Unit and the police and rescued the baby. Locals said that the father of the baby killed the mother recently and is nowhere to be seen. Borbari police has registered a case in this regard, stated Madhumita Sonowal, Centre Coordinator of Childline, Dibrugarh.

The rescued baby was later handed over to one Special Adoption Agency in Sivasagar, Childine sources informed.
