AGARTALA, Feb 9 - At least six persons, including two police officers, were injured when supporters of ruling CPI(M) and Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) pitched a battle at Brahmabari under Takarjala Police Station of Sepahijala district on Friday.
Two injured police officers Bharat Debbarma and Ringrai Halam were shifted to GBP Hospital as they received major injuries due to rampant stone pelting.
CPI(M) candidate for Takarjala Assembly Constituency Ramendra Debbarma had a narrow escape as clash began when his vehicle passed the spot, said police officials.
Heavy reinforcement has been made at Brahmabari, close to Amarendranagar Police Outpost and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Law and Order, KK Srijesh and DIG Arindam Nath have visited the spot to defuse tension ahead of the Assembly elections.
A political programme was scheduled at Amarendranagar in support of the ruling party candidate on Friday. As per the plan, the CPI (M) candidate along with his supporters was moving towards the destination, but IPFT supporters stopped their vehicles for checking as they had information of carrying lathi and some stones.
However, the police officer declined to check two vehicles and gave a green signal to a vehicle carrying the candidate. The police role triggered anger among the IPFT supporters and suddenly attacked second vehicles with pelting stone leading to clash between the two sides. When the police came to the scene, they also came under the attack that resulted in injuring of two ASIs.
Later, another round of stone pelting took place near Amarendranagar leading to some more injures. Two police officers and some people were injured in two clashes, said Superintendent of Police (Control), Jayanta Dey.
