6 GNLA cadres surrender

TURA, Oct 7 � In a major boost to the ushering of peace in the Garo Hills region, six hardcore Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres led by an area commander surrendered before the Meghalaya police at a ceremony held at the Tura SP�s office last evening.

The cadres surrendered before the IGP (western range), H Nongpluh in the presence of the SP Mukesh Singh, DC , Pravin Bakshi and commandant of the 5th Meghalaya battalion, Aditya Goenka and other senior officials.

The six cadres who surrendered have been identified as Manan Ch Sangma, (30) alias Kimpret, area commander of Dadenggre, Kasan Ch Marak, (20) alias Habraghat, Simarong S Sangma, (24) alias Sainal, Chakseng Ch. Marak, (24) alias Malran, Jemistar D Sangma, (21) alias Deniram and Tengku S Sangma, (19) alias Watcheng.

Most of the cadres were senior in the GNLA and were recruits of the 2010 batch. They were trained in Durama hills in Garo Hills.

�We are happy to welcome our young friends back to normal life, who have realized that it is no point fighting and indulging in violence�, said Nongpluh, while according a welcome to the cadres.

The cadres surrendered an AK-56 with 2 magazines, 82 live rounds of AKs, two 7.65 pistols with 2 magazines and 12 rounds of 7.65 bullets and one highly explosive grenade.
