6 feared dead in bridge collapse

ITANAGAR, Oct 10 � Five women and a child are feared to be dead after an under-construction wire rope suspension bridge over Tawang Chu river in Tawang district bordering Bhutan collapsed, police said.

Two wire ropes snapped from the anchor bolt of the bridge being built at Khetnallah recently when seven persons were crossing the bridge which was still not ready for use, Tawang deputy commissioner Kemo Lollen said.

While five women and a child fell into the river and were washed away, Thinley Norbu, 23, held on to the bridge�s dangling suspenders and was later saved by the locals.

The missing persons were identified as Langha Drema, Tashi Yangchin, 21, Thutan Yangzom, 21, Nima Chongzom, 27, Dorjee Chozom, 23, (all women) and a three-year-old Tenzin Phuntso of Gyamdong village.

Meanwhile, a junior engineer in-charge of the bridge has been taken into custody and a magisterial probe ordered into the case. � PTI
