590 cough syrup bottles seized, 2 arrested

TURA, Sept 16 - Phulbari police in West Garo Hills on Monday seized 590 bottles of a cough syrup that were illegally procured for the drug trade. The police team also arrested two persons who were handling the transportation, allegedly from Assam to other parts of the same state.

The drug seizure took place at around 2.30 am on Monday in Kokaimari village.

According to police sources, the bust was made by a police party along with CRPF personnel who were patrolling in the village. They detained two persons with a suspicious package which later turned to be 590 bottles of cough syrup.

The consignment of five cartons of the cough syrup was allegedly given to the two accused at Kokaimari by one Ali from Goalpara in Assam, who came on an SUV. The two arrested accused have been identified as Alom Rehman of Maulakandi and Nozor Ali of Bangalkhata village.

�The accused were supposed to take the consignment further into Assam. The packages were seized, opened and counted as per procedure. It was found that there were 590 bottles of 100 ml each of Relaxcof (Choloropheniramine Maleate and Codiene Phosphate),� said West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Dr MGR Kumar.

Police said that a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered in Phulbari PS.
