59 coal-laden trucks seized

JORABAT, Jan 19 - The Meghalaya Police seized 59 trucks ferrying coal above permissible limit near Byrnihat on National Highway-6 today.

According to the sources, the coal-laden trucks from Meghalaya were moving towards Guwahati city via NH-6. The police seized the trucks for violating the guidelines of the Supreme Court by carrying 30 to 32 tonnes of coal in each truck. The permissible limit is 9 tonnes.

However, some of the drivers and helpers of the trucks managed to flee the spot as they failed to provide valid documents against their consignments.

Later, the top-ranked police officials also reached the spot and took stock of the situation. The value of seized coal has been estimated to be more than Rs 1.5 crore. Last evening, 16 coal-laden trucks were also seized by the Sonapur police.
