55 structures demolished during eviction

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 2 - The Kamrup Metro district administration today carried out a major eviction drive against illegal encroachments along the National Highway 37 on the Assam side of the road, from Khanapara Flyover Point to Ganesh Mandir in the 9th Mile area.

As many as 55 illegal structures were demolished as part of the drive, including one garage and a concrete building.

Police officials and staff from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also helped the district administration in the drive.

The drive comes less than a week after the district administration had issued an order prohibiting street vending activities in that stretch and asked local officials to take action against encroachment within seven days.

The administration had also banned parking of vehicles along the road from Khanapara Flyover Point to Ganesh Mandir at 9th Mile and declared the stretch as a No Parking Zone.

It had said that such activities are causing severe traffic congestion as well as inconvenience to the general public commuting through that road in that part of the highway.
