BARPETA, March 25 - Fifty four out of the 57 nomination papers submitted for the six assembly constituencies under Barpeta election district were found valid during scrutiny which took place on Thursday.

In Sorbhog, the number of valid nominations is 15 while in Sarukshetri this number is 12. In Baghbar, nine papers were found valid and in Barpeta, seven papers were found valid. The number of valid nomination papers found in Jania and Chenga were six and five respectively.

One nomination paper in Chenga and two in Sarukshetri were rejected after scrutiny. Prominent among the rejected nomination papers was that of Liakat Ali Khan, a former MLA of Chenga.

The AIUDF had nominated two candidates from Chenga Liakat Ali Khan and Manowara Khatun, ex-chairperson of the Barpeta Zila Parishad and in the last hours of submission of nominations, the party withdrew Liakat as a party nominee sparing him from even contesting as an Independent.
