DERGAON, May 25 - With 52 persons reported as COVID-19 positive on the same day, the total active cases rose to 56 in Golaghat district on Monday.

This leads to a 65 positive cases in the district as of now, out of which 9 have already been discharged from hospital.

Confirming the cases, the DIPRO in-charge Papu Gogoi said that tests were performed in two batches of 18 each and out of these 34 cases were found to be positive. These positive cases are people who had returned to the State from outside during last 3 to 4 days.

Most of the patients are residents of Merapani, Kachamari, Gamari and Nalani Pathar and they had returned from Chennai, Mumbai etc., by train.

They were later quarantined at Maheswari Bibah Bhavan and Anajari Bibah Bhavan in Golaghat.

All are now at the institutional facility quarantine centres and so there is no chance of any community transmission of the virus, Gogoi said.

They will be shifted to Golaghat Civil Hospital, which has been designated as a COVID-19 hospital, as early as possible, he added.

Although a great hue and cry was witnessed among residents here when the first 8 cases were detected on March 31, but at present, no such panic has been seen in the district. This is only because the quarantine protocol has satisfied the common people in general.

Prasenjit Khound, a resident of Dergaon said that since cases were detected from among the persons quarantined in the centres, the mortality rate was quite low in India. But being careful is the need of the hour, he said.

The headmaster of Dusutimukh High School Sachi Gohain said that due to the relaxation of lockdown norms, the common people were in jovial mood.

The train journey without observing social distance may be the cause of infection among the youths of Merapani, Nalani Pathar areas, he said.

A 10-year-old boy at Kamargaon Dergaon Jnandeep Hazarika said that he was not worried over the number of infected persons.

I urge all to observe the social distancing norms and wear masks, which is a must for the times we are living in, he said.
