GUWAHATI, April 10 � With the motto of fostering peace and unity through cultural bonding, the Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan � one of the oldest organizations holding Bihu programmes on stage, would step into its golden jubilee year this Rongali Bihu.
Various programmes have been lined up for the golden jubilee celebrations that would continue for the whole year and would incorporate the three major harvest festivals of Assam � the Rongali, Kongali and Bhogali Bihu.
Like every year, this year too, the Sanmilan is going to hold colourful cultural extravaganza on the occasion of its 49th Rongali Bihu celebrations from April 14 to April 17 at the Assam Engineering Institute playground at Chandmari, Guwahati.
�Bihu is an inseparable part of the Assamese society and thus we try our best to make this occasion very special for the people of Guwahati and those who come here to celebrate the festival,� Sanjev Kumar Lahkar, president of the Bihu Sanmilan said at a press meet today.
�Other than holding cultural programmes, we would organize Bihu dance and Bihu song competitions. A number of other competitions like sports, art, marathon, cycle marathon among others would be organized on the occasion,� he said.
Like every year the �Assam Bihuwati� and �Srestha Nasoni� competitions are expected to be the biggest crowd pullers.
Cultural icon of the State Dr Bhupen Hazarika would be felicitated in the Bihu function on April 15, according to the members of the committee. Moreover, reputed singers like Mitali Choudhury, Pankaj Bordoloi, Kula Barua, Apurba Das would also be felicitated on the occasion.
�This year, the rituals of �Goru Bihu� would also be observed in traditional manner to give Guwahatians a feel of the Bihu rituals observed in the villages,� Lahkar mentioned.
Not confining itself just into the Bihu celebrations, the committee is also engaged into various social activities as a part of which, it would provide scholarships to top three rank holders in the HSLC examinations and first rank holder in the HSSLC (Arts) examination.
The Rongali Bihu celebration at the AEI field would be kicked off by noted educationist Dr Hiren Gohain, who would hoist the Sanmilan�s flag on April 14 at 9.30 am. Gita Hatikakaty, reputed poet and lyricist would release the Sanmilan�s souvenir Gogona.
The women wing of the celebration committee has also organized various pitha making, nisukoni geet, gosain naam, bia naam, saaj-par, buwari ekok nritya competitions.
