By CORRESPONDENT

DERGAON, Oct 4 - The 50- year-old Dergaon Rajahuwa Durga Puja Samiti is preparing to celebrate the Durga Puja without single-use plastic.

This time the Puja Committee is going to celebrate the golden jubilee of the puja celebration. To mark the golden jubilee year, the committee is planning to set up its pandal with the shape of a traditional Dhak, the beats of which are an integral part of Durga puja.

The puja committee has always given importance in keeping the environment clean and green around the puja pandal, and thats the reason why a large gathering is always witnessed in the pandal by the NH-37 at Dergaon Chariali. The audience always ranks the pandal as the best for its clean, green and eco-friendly environment.

Besides using biodegradable materials for decoration, the committee is also keen to minimise the light and sound pollution during the celebration.

It may be mentioned here that the first puja committee with Ramavatar Jalan as the president and Anil Sarma, Dilip Phukan and Gakul Sarma as joint secretaries celebrated the Durga puja from October 10 to 14 in 1970. Since then, the puja is being celebrated with gaiety.

The secretary of the puja committee Surjya Ramavatar Agarwall told this correspondent that they would try to show the tradition of puja celebration in true spirit and not with any artificial exhibition.

We are trying to celebrate the puja by cutting down the use of plastic. Instead, we shall keep the pandal clean, green and eco-friendly, Agarwall said.

To mark the golden jubilee, a magazine titled, Bodhan will also be released, the secretary said.

This time I find the puja very enjoyable due to its eco-friendly nature, Biren Chandra Saikia, a resident of Dergaon town said.

It may be added here that in 2017, the puja committee received the best clean and green puja pandal award given by AASHRAY, an organisation working for environment conservation.
