SILCHAR, April 26 - Union Minister of State for Shipping and Finance Pon Radhakrishnan on Wednesday visited different areas of the Barak Valley to oversee various ongoing projects of the Indian Waterways Authority of India (IWAY).

Accompanied by IWAI officials, Radhakrishnan visited different places including Rajatilla and Borkhola in Cachar district and Badarpur in Karimganj district and took stock of the ongoing works of the IWAI in the Barak river.

The government is committed to connect the North-east and enhance the possibilities of inland water transport in the region. During my visit, I was told about public angst over land erosion at various places, especially at the Panchgram and Rajatilla areas. The officials have been given instructions to conduct studies on the specific areas, the Minister added.

However, he was quick to add that almost 50 per cent dredging of the Barak has been completed and the work will be fully finished well within April 2019.
