SILCHAR, Sept 26 - At least 50 people, including women and a few media persons, were injured today after the police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse BJP members and supporters who were protesting against the detention of six BJP leaders, including the Silchar MLA, outside the Tarapur Police Outpost. The injured are undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Meanwhile, Section 144 of the CrPC has been clamped all over the Cachar district.

Tension prevailed after an incident at a Kali temple in the Meherpur locality here on Friday night. A similar incident was also reported from the Second Link Road.

The police today took six BJP leaders, including Silchar MLA Dilip Paul, under preventive detention when they were protesting against Fridays incident. Paul, along with the BJPs Cachar district president Kaushik Rai, BJPs Cachar Yuba Morcha president Rajesh Kumar Das, Silchar Municipal Board commissioner Dipayan Chakraborty, BJPs Silchar Mandal committee president Babu Singh and ex-municipal commissioner Gopal Roy, were detained under Section 107 of the CrPC, said Cachar SP Rajveer Singh.

Following the incidents, security has been tightened here. After the Executive Magistrate passed the release order of the detained BJP leaders, the district BJP condemned the police action.
