5 ULFA cadres held, arms recovered

GUWAHATI, April 23 - Hours before Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal�s visit to Charaideo today, police has arrested five hardcore ULFA(I) cadres and subsequently, based on their confession, recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition.

While the ULFA cadres were arrested yesterday, the recoveries were done in the wee hours today. Those arrested have been identified as Apurba Gogoi, Simanta Gogoi, Biraj Asom, Lakshyajit Gogoi and Sidhartha Gogoi.

The seized arms and ammunition include MQ 81 Assault Rifles, Magazines of MQ 81,�a 7.65 mm Pistol (Russian Made) with magazine and a 0.22 mm (Factory Made) with magazine among others.�

�Acting on a tip-off about militants taking shelter in a house in Tarai village at Sapekhati police station area, a joint team of police and Army led by Charaideo Superintendent of Police Anand Mishra had launched the operation,� sources said, adding the security forces had intensified operation along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh-Nagaland border.

Assam Police sources informed that the arrested cadres were wanted in a number of serious offences including kidnaping and bomb blasts. Police also arrested another person for harbouring the ULFA cadres. All the arrested accused have been sanitized and COVID-19 tests done.
