GUWAHATI, July 6 - The process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is going on as per schedule, even as the State NRC Coordinator has recommended suspension of five State government officials, engaged in the process, for violating guidelines. As per the directive of the Supreme Court, the final NRC is scheduled to be published by July 31.
Highly placed official sources told The Assam Tribune that of the 3,500 officers engaged in the job of conducting the hearings on claims and objections, five were found to be violating the guidelines issued to them.
During the quality checks, it was found that those five officers did not carry out their jobs properly and grave anomalies were found in their reports. Accordingly, show cause notices were issued to them and they could not provide satisfactory replies. The NRC Coordinator has recommended to the government that those officials be suspended immediately and disciplinary proceedings be initiated against them. Steps have also been taken to reverify the hearings conducted by the officers concerned, sources said.
Meanwhile, the process of filing of claims by the persons whose names were deleted from the draft of the NRC in the second draft released on June 26, started yesterday.
It may be mentioned here that the first draft of the NRC was published last year and names of around 40 lakh applicants were not included in the same. After scrutiny, it was found that around 1.02 lakh persons, whose names were included in the draft, were not eligible to be included in the NRC and their names have also been deleted. However, those people have the right to file claims and the process started yesterday.
Sources said that filing of claims and hearings of such persons are being conducted on the same days and the process is scheduled to be completed by the end of next week.
The process of disposing of the claims and objections are nearing completion and as per the directive of the Supreme Court, multi-layer checking is now going on and the verdicts and reports of the officers engaged by the process of conducting hearings are being cross verified by senior officers.
Data entry work is also going on and after completion of the process of disposing of the claims and objections, there would be enough time for mopping up operations before the publication of the final NRC.
The process is going on as per schedule and there should not be any problem in publishing the final NRC by July 31, sources asserted.
