TURA, May 4 A day after the sensational escape of six prisoners from the Williamnagar Jail, Director General of Prisons BL Buam, reached Williamnagar, the headquarter of East Garo Hills district to begin a probe into the role of the warders in the escape.

Five under trial prisoners (UTPs) along with a rape convict broke out of the Williamnagar Jail on Sunday afternoon after overpowering the guards posted at the front gate of the jail.

Three of the escapees were members of Achik Songna Anpachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) outfit, namely, Sengchang Sangma, Raksim Momin, Dinesh Marak while Grewith D Sangma and Jasan Ch Marak were from the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

Another convict in the infamous Winter Festival gang rape case, Chingkam Ch Marak also escaped with the five. Sengchang Sangma and Raksim Momin were involved in the killing of a businessman from Rongsak, Bharat Singh Shekhawat last October.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of EGH, Cyril Diengdoh stated that an initial enquiry was done into the incident on Sunday and prima facie the escape happened just as the warders had stated on the day.

He further stated that another investigation into the matter was being undertaken by the police (Prisons).

However, till the filing of this report, none of the escaped prisoners have been traced as yet though a search is still on to nab them.
