5 lakh hit in Barpeta dist

BARPETA, July 27 - The overall flood situation has remained grim and about 5 lakh people have been affected so far in Barpeta district. Road communication along the district has been devastated and about 1,000 school buildings have been affected by the floodwater.

In Kalgachia revenue circle, more than 2 lakh people at 100 villages have been affected whereas about 2 lakh people belonging to 150 villages have been affected under Baghbar revenue circle area. In Sarthebari, Barpeta, Chenga and Barnagar revenue circles too, several villages with about 2 lakh people are languishing under floodwater. Crop areas of about 21,000 hectares have been washed away.

According to latest reports, almost 1,000 educational institutions, including 667 ME and LP schools and more than 100 anganwadi centres, are under floodwater. As many as 31 rural roads and several embankments and dykes have been washed away making communication hazardous in the affected areas.

The district administration has taken steps for relief and rescue operations. As many as 46 boats with SDRF and NDRF personnel have been pressed into service. Besides, four medical and one veterinary team have kept strict vigil in the affected areas. Water of all the rivers flowing through the district is above danger level.
