TINSUKIA, Aug 11 � In a special drive, Doomdooma police apprehended five persons who tried to extort huge amounts of money from various individuals by serving letters written in letterheads of the Untied Liberation Front, Asom (ULFA) of both Independent and Pro-talk groups from the Tongona and Barekuri areas of Tinsukia district on Saturday and Sunday.
The existence of the extortionist group came to light when a contractor of Oil India Ltd, a resident of Shantipur village under Doomdooma police station, filed an FIR on August 2 last after receiving a demand letter signed by Jibon Moran, deputy commander of ULFA (Ind) for Rs 10 lakh. Police acted upon the case and apprehended Bidhan Dohotia and Sanjib Talukdar of Tongona, Sukheshwer Chutia alias File alias Sukhey, a student of Class XII and Jintu Chowrok alias Kabul, a student of Class IX from Dighalsako of Makum and Rupanjal Bora of Tinsukia Thermal Gate.
According to police sources, the group has two more members who are yet to be apprehended. The police seized 20 demand letters in ULFA letterheads and a mobile handset from the extortionist group.
