5-day police custody to drug kingpin; more peddlers held

GUWAHATI, July 29 - Based on the statement made by drug kingpin L Sangita Rani Laishambam, Crime Branch of Guwahati Police on Wednesday apprehended two drug peddlers Asadul Haque and Joynam Khatun from Gate No-6 area of the city. The police seized a passport belonging to one Moina Begum, Rs 2.58 lakh, 23 grams of brown sugar, two scooties and some gold jewellery from their possession.

It may be mentioned that, acting on a tip-off, sleuths of Crime Branch on Tuesday conducted a raid in the apartment of L Sangita Rani Laishambam located in Solapara area under Paltan Bazar Police Station.

During the search operation, police seized over Rs 74 lakh in cash. The crime branch stated that kingpin Sangita Rani used to keep money in her residence to finance illicit trafficking of narcotropic substances from outside the State.

Along with Sangita Rani, Sam Laithangbam and Thangkhosat were also apprehended from the apartment. All three hail from Manipur.

According to the police, kingpin Sangita Rani has previous crime records of involvement in illicit trading in narcotropic substances. She was earlier arrested by Basistha police under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, but was later granted bail by the court.

Sangita Rani was also in constant touch with many known drug peddlers of the region and used to supply drugs to many others in the city.

A senior official of Crime Branch informed that Sangita Rani has a large network of drug business in the region and many people are involved with her racket. She imports narcotic substances from Manipur and supplies them to city-based drug peddlers. Today the court sent her to five-day police custody.

�We will try to extract as much information as possible about the racket from Sangita Rani in the five-day period and will try to apprehend other shareholders of her business,� the official said.
