5 Cong EMs of NCHAC join BJP

By Correspondent

HAFLONG, Oct 9 - With five Executive Members (EMs) of the Congress, along with four MACs, reportedly joining the BJP, the path has been paved for the saffron party to form the government of the NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC). The BJP has now reached the majority figure of 16.

The NCHAC has 28 elected and two nominated members. Earlier, the Congress had 21 MACs and the BJP had seven.

When contacted, the vice president of the Dima Hasao district BJP committee, Ibeichung Jeme, however, said that he has no official information about the Congress members joining his party.

Observers said at a time when the NCHAC has not been functioning due to the agitation of the council employees, the latest development will only add to the prevailing uncertainty.

It may be mentioned here that the functioning of the NCHAC has come to a standstill as the council employees have been staging a stir over salaries and the enhancement of dearness allowance since the last several months. The employees warned that whichever party forms the council government must redress their grievances. Otherwise, they would not allow the members into the council.
