5 arrested for assault on police party

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 14 - Five persons have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in attacking a police party to prevent it from arresting a declared Bangladeshi national in Morigaon district earlier this week, even as the main accused, Habibur Rahman Siddique, is still at large.

Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly today, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rakibul Hussain said that a case has been filed in the Morigaon Police Station on the August 10 incident when a police party, led by SI Prasad Ali, went to the Milanpur area of Morigaon to arrest Rustam Ali, who was declared an illegal Bangladeshi by the Morigaon district Foreigners Tribunal.

A group of miscreants, led by Congress leader Habibur Rahman Siddique, attacked the police party, resulting in injury to several police personnel.

The Congress has already suspended Siddique from the party for his alleged involvement in the incident. Hussain said that SI Musfiq Ali is conducting the investigation into the August 10 incident.

We have directed the police to take action. Five persons have been nabbed. However, Habibur Rahman Siddique is still at large, said the minister.

Earlier, raising the issue, AGP MLA Bhupen Roy said that such incidents could demoralise the police force if tough measures are not taken. Police should ensure that such incidents do not recur, he said.
