By Sanjoy Kr Hazarika

DERGAON, Jan 1 - The year 2015 was a good year for the residents of Dergaon. There were at least five achievements for which the residents of the town could be justifiably proud.

At the beginning of the year, the news came that the UGC had declared Dergaon Kamal Dowerah (DKD) College, the only institution of higher education at Dergaon, as the model college for the uplift of the tea garden labourer (TGL) students. Following this selection, under the new rules of the UGC, the college will get a special grant of four crore rupees under the Central Government Fund for the development of the infrastructure as well as academic environment.

After that the name of Ani Lama, a girl from Dergaon was included in the list of participants from India in the World Junior Boxing Championship. With this success, the sports arena of Dergaon felt proud. Then noted social worker of Dergaon, Atul Goswami was declared to be the recipient of artiste pension by the State Government. This recognition was widely greeted by the residents of greater Dergaon.

On the other hand, as a result of the innovative activities in the field of conservation of nature, a nature organisation of Dergaon AASHRAY was made the nodal agency for organising the Governors Award for Tulsi plantation. This is the first organisation from Dergaon to be recognised by the Governor for organising the Governors Award at the State level. Last but not the least, noted writer Prafulla Chandra Bora was conferred the Sahityacharya Sayed Abdul Malik Award posthumously by the State Government in the last part of the year. The award was certainly an honour not only to the writer but also for the people of greater Dergaon itself. The residents of greater Dergaon hope that the year 2016 will again bring more good news for the people of the town.
