49 pc candidates undergraduates

GUWAHATI, April 1 � The latest report of the Assam Election Watch has revealed that 49 per cent of the total candidates contesting in the first phase of ensuing Assembly elections for 62 constituencies are undergraduates, while 2 per cent candidates have only passed fifth standard.

Of the 355 candidates analyzed, 114 of them are graduates and 44 of them are postgraduate degree holder, the report stated. Only 5 per cent of the total candidates analyzed are doctorates.

Among the top political parties, the Indian National Congress has 43 candidates who are graduates and above, followed by BJP (31), AGP (28) and AIUDF (11).

A total of twelve candidates in fray for the first phase elections have not given their educational details in the affidavit.

Of the 355 candidates analyzed, two candidates are literate (have studied till class four) and six others are just fifth passed.

There are 18 who have only passed class VIII while 85 candidates of them have passed tenth exams.

The first phase of Assembly election is on April 4.
