4,598 killed in road mishaps in 2010-11

GUWAHATI, March 7 � A total of 12,397 road accidents took place in Assam during the years 2010 and 2011, resulting in the death of 4,598 persons and injuries to 14,084 persons.

In the year 2011, 2,342 persons died and 6,505 were injured, while the corresponding figures in 2010 were 2,256 and 7,579 respectively.

National highways accounted for the highest fatalities with figures of 1,481 and 1,401 deaths in 2011 and 2010 respectively, followed by State ways with 479 and 471 deaths respectively.

On the injury front as well, national highways bore the brunt of the deaths with figures of 3,393 and 4,445 injured persons in 2011 and 2010 respectively, followed by State ways with figures of 1,647 and 1,786 respectively.

This was revealed in the Assembly today by Transport Minister Chandan Brahma in a written reply to a question by Pallab Lochan Das (Congress).

Brahma also said that a number of measures are being initiated to check the high incidence of road accidents in the State. Observance of Road Safety Week, providing zebra crossing for pedestrians, warning signs in accident-prone areas, frequent checking for violation of road safety laws and realization of on-the-spot fine, checking of drunk driving through breath analyser, and making use of hamlets and seat belts mandatory, among others.
