DIBRUGARH, June 20 - The Rotary Club of Dibrugarh in association with social worker Niranjan Bagaria and Rotary Club of Poona Downtown organised a free artificial upper limb fixation camp at KK Saharia Eye Hospital where 42 persons including women and children were fitted with artificial arms.
Altogether 65 persons from different parts of the North East attended the camp. During screening, 23 were disqualified while the rest 42 were provided with the artificial limbs. Their family members were given free accommodation and food by the organisers.
�By providing these free arms to people regardless of caste, creed and skin colour, we wish to build a society where every human being leads a life free of dependency on others,� said Dr Momi Neog, president of Rotary Club of Dibrugarh.
The fitted arm is called LN-4 � a fourth generation model developed by Ellen Meadows Prosthetic Hand Foundation, US. The LN-4 prosthetic hand is a low-cost, light, durable, functional prosthetic hand. Ernie Meadows, Michael Mendonca and Maurice LeBlanc, an award-winning mechanical engineer who spent his career focusing on assistive technology for people with disabilities with special interest in upper-limb prosthetics, worked to develop a hand that could be cheaply produced but maintained high quality. After several years of tests, the resulting hand was named LN-4 prosthetic hand after Ernie�s deceased daughter Ellen.
A similar programme was organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Marwari Mahila Sammelan, Dibrugarh branch at the same venue, where the organisers implemented a project called Advance Prosthetic Leg Fitting.
