417-year-old Royal Durga Puja from Sept 19

GAURIPUR, Sept 5 - The 417-year-old Royal Durga Puja of the erstwhile Zamindary Estate of Gauripur is scheduled to be held from September 19, the date on which Mahalaya falls this year.

Brisk preparations are on for the same at the temple located in the eastern part of the historic Mahamaya playground.

It is customary that the Astadhatu idol of Goddess Mahamaya will be brought to the temple situated on the eastern part of the Mahamaya playground from the original temple of the Royal family in a chariot and will be ceremonially installed on the altar and regular puja rituals will start on the eve of Mahalaya.

Thousands of devotees are expected to take part on the Astami, Navami and Dasmi Puja where a number of goats will be sacrificed. It is also customary that the idol of Goddess Mahamaya made of sola-craft will be separately installed and puja rituals will begin accordingly.

The idol of Goddess Mahamaya will be immersed at the intersection of the Gadadhar and the Brahmaputra rivers and thereafter, the �Ranachandi� and the �Kaman� puja will be performed in front of the Royal palace at Matiabag area of Gauripur.
