41 in fray for first phase LS polls in State

GUWAHATI, March 28 - A total of 41 candidates remain in fray for the five Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam which will go to the polls in the first phase on April 11 after withdrawal of candidature.

Today was the last date for withdrawal of nominations by candidates in the five constituencies. The five constituencies that will go to the polls in the first phase are Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Tezpur and Kaliabor.

Independent candidate of Tezpur constituency Iqbal Ansari and Independent candidate for Lakhimpur constituency Purnakanta Deuri withdrew their nominations today.

A total of 45 candidates had filed their nominations for the five seats of first phase. The nominations of two candidates who had filed papers for the Tezpur seat had been found invalid and rejected during scrutiny on Tuesday.

Now, altogether 41 candidates remain in fray for the five constituencies which will go to the polls in the first phase on April 11, including 11 candidates from Lakhimpur, eight each from Jorhat and Dibrugarh and seven candidates each from Tezpur and Kaliabor seats.

Meanwhile, the notification for elections to the constituencies which will go to the polls in the third phase on April 23 was issued today. Four constituencies of Assam -- Guwahati, Barpeta, Dhubri and Kokrajhar -- will go to the polls in the third phase.

AIUDF candidate Badruddin Ajmal filed his nomination for the Dhubri seat today. No nominations were filed for the other three constituencies.

The last date for filing of nominations to the constituencies going to the polls in the third phase is April 4.
