40.92 lakh people hit by floods

GUWAHATI, Aug 8 - Around 40.92 lakh people have been affected so far in the devastating floods this year in the State with 41, 426.48 hectares of agricultural land being exposed to immense loss.

This was informed by Minister of State for Revenue and Disaster Management Pallab Lochan Das in the Legislative Assembly on Monday in a written reply to a short notice question by AGP MLA Phanibushan Choudhury.

Das said that the State experienced three wave of floods so far and 4,675 villages in 29 districts incurred heavy loss. He mentioned that the Government was still collecting information on loss of life and property and that the exact picture would be clear once the situation returns to normal.

On the other hand, in another written reply to Choudhury�s short notice question concerning Majuli, Das said that since 2001 till now, Majuli lost around 13,440 bighas to erosion. He further informed that the Government has till March this year rehabilitated 291 affected families.
