4 workers hurt as bridge collapses

ITANAGAR, Nov 28 - Altogether four workers were injured when an under-construction steel suspension bridge near Balemu under the Kalaktang Assembly Constituency in West Kameng district collapsed on Tuesday.

The bridge comes along the Orang-Kalaktang-Shergoan-Rupa-Tenga Road, which is being built by the Border Road Task Force (BRTF).

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kalaktang, T Aran, stated that four workers were injured in the mishap, adding that they were evacuated to a nearby hospital. However, two of them have been referred to Guwahati for better treatment.

The ADC said that the bridge is being constructed by a Guwahati-based civil firm under sub-contract terms through the Bridge Construction Company of the BRO. Further, he has directed the BRTF to ascertain the cause of the bridge collapse.

�I have also directed the Balemu Police to immediately conduct an inquiry to ascertain the reason of collapse and submit a report,� the ADC said.

Meanwhile, West Kameng SP Raja Bhantia, when contacted, said that the police are investigating the matter. �Bomnag bridge, located near 1700 chainage, was entrusted to M/s Competent Infrastructure and Consulting Pvt Ltd by BRO. Accordingly, the company took up the bridge construction work which was on the verge of completion. It was also learnt that the bridge was supposed to be handed over to BRO on December 7. But the bridge suddenly collapsed at about 2.50 pm on November 26, injuring four labourers while on their task,� he said.

�A discreet enquiry is under way. The exact cause of the collapse of the almost completed bridge will be known after completion of the investigation process,� the SP added.
