4 suspended for administering expired saline

By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, Oct 19 - Following administering of an expired saline on 12-year-old Abu Sufian Mazumder by some staff of SK Roy Civil Hospital, the Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Moloy Bora placed the latter under immediate suspension.

Those suspended are Bhaskar Das, hospital administrator, Shanta Sharma Roy, GNM, Fakaruddin Laskar, pharmacist and store in-charge, and Kamala Purkayastha, matron-in-charge.

Deputy Commissioner Bora also asked the Health and Family Welfare Department to initiate proper action against Superintendent Dr Subendhu Chakraborty for allegedly remaining absent from duty unauthorisedly and leaving the station without permission, in contravention of oficial instructions.

It may be mentioned that the attendants of the patient found out to their utter dismay that the saline injected had crossed the expiry date in September 2016. As serious unrest began in the hospital, Deputy Commissioner Bora instituted an inquiry headed by Circle Officer and Executive Magistrate Sarfaraz Haque.

During the course of investigation, it was clear that some employees had committed gross negligence by storing a number of medicines that have crossed their expiry dates.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Bora has directed the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Health to conduct a thorough probe into the incident vis-a-vis as to how expired medicine found its way into the store of the hospital, and to submit a report to him latest by tomorrow.
